U.S. Protests European Recognition of Serbia
(London, February 2, 1996)
Recognition by the European Union is being opposed by the United States. According to a State Department spokesman, "We don't think it is time to welcome Belgrade back into Europe. It hasn't yet done enough to deserve it." The U.S. cites Serbia's reluctance to cooperate with the U.N. war crimes tribunal, failure to use its influence over the Bosnian Serbs to force the surrender of war criminals on their territory, and the of harboring war criminals. The State Department points out that Serbia has yet to guarantee the rights of ethnic Albanians living in its province of
Kosovo, and that Serbia has still not withdrawn from all of Croatia.
