U.S. House Names Panel to Probe Iran-Bosnia Arms Deal
Four Republicans, Three Democrats
to Head Million-Dollar Committee

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Four Republicans and three Democrats were named Friday to serve on a House select subcommittee to investigate the Clinton administration's role in Iranian arms shipments to Bosnia and Croatia. They join Illinois Republican Henry Hyde, who was named last week to chair the six-month investigation. The full House approved creation of the subcommittee Wednesday and authorized it to spend $1 million on the probe.

The Republicans are Doug BeReuters of Nebraska, Dan Burton of Indiana, Cass Ballenger of North Carolina and Sam Brownback of Kansas. Democrats named were Lee Hamilton of Indiana, Howard Berman of California and Alcee Hastings of Florida.

Administration officials have admitted the United States did not object to the arms shipments from Iran to the Bosnia government through Croatia in 1994 and 1995 but say they did not break any U.S. laws or violate the U.N. arms embargo in effect at the time. Democrats said majority Republicans were conducting the investivation to embarrass President Clinton before this November's election. Similar investigations have been started by the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees.
