Foot and Mouth Epidemic Emergency Declared in Kosovo Province The entire southern province of Kosovo has been declared an endangered zone
Tanjug said people living there have been advised to cancel or at least restrict any trips to stop the virus from spreading. It was not imediately clear how many infected animals have been found, although one report said fewer than 100 head of cattle had been destroyed. Earlier, the independent Beta news agency reported that 360 veterinary officers had been sent to Kosovo to examine herds and slaughter any animals suspected of having the virus.
In the past few weeks, foot-and-mouth disease has appeared in Albania, Macedonia and Greece. The border region between Yugoslavia and Albania is mountainous and ethnic Albanians on both sides share cattle herds. Farmers along the Macedonian border also often allow their herds to graze freely.
Livestock markets have been closed in several Kosovo municipalities and the authorities have banned farmers from grazing cattle outside enclosed grazing land. The World Veterinarian Organisation proclaimed Yugoslavia free of foot and mouth disease in 1974.

BELGRADE, July 13 (Reuters) - Yugoslav authorities have declared a state of emergency in four regions contaminated with foot-and-mouth livestock disease, the official news agency Tanjug said on Saturday. The entire southern province of Kosovo has been declared an "endangered zone," it added. Four municipalities along the southern border region with Albania and Macedonia have been named as infected: Kacanik, Strpci, Kosovska Vitina and Prizren.
