Deadline Extended for
Bosnian Refugee
Voter RegistrationClick Here to Register.
UPDATED JULY 25TH (Reuters) - More than one million Bosnian refugees abroad will have an extra week to register to vote in the former Yugoslav republic's first postwar election, international organisers said on Thursday. In a statement by its Bosnia office, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said it had extended the deadline for registration by refugees from July 31 to August 5.
The elections are scheduled for September 14. Around 1.4 million refugees from 43 months of nationalist fighting in Bosnia are dispersed through more than 35 countries, said the OSCE statement issued in Sarajevo.
"The Provisional Election Committee has decided on the extension because refugees in a number of countries were not fully aware of the procedure involved in registering for upcoming elections," it said.
Bosnian state television said the foreign ministry had asked the OSCE for an extension after finding that only seven percent of eligible refugee voters had signed up as of July 22. Most refugees are believed to be Muslims evicted from areas of Bosnia seized by separatist Bosnian Serb or Croat forces in the war and retained by them despite a 1995 peace treaty that mandates a reunification of Bosnia.
"The OSCE mission to Bosnia-Herzegovina is asking Internet users around the world who may know refugees from (Bosnia) in their community to contact them and assist them in registering or applying for an absentee ballot," an OSCE spokesman said. "Refugees may submit an electronic request to obtain an official application for an absentee ballot."
It said details about eligibility and an e-mail request for an application form could found on the Internet at this OSCE Homepage address: http:/www-osce.austria.eu.net.
The OSCE is anxious to maximise turnout for the elections to heighten their legitimacy among estranged Muslim, Croat and Serb ethnic factions who are supposed to set up joint governing institutions after the vote.
