ZAGREB, July 24 (Reuters) - Three Bosnian Croats have been arrested in connection with the shooting of a female U.S. embassy employee near Sarajevo earlier this month, police in central Bosnia said on Wednesday.
Bosnian Croat police said in a statement three suspects were detained last Friday in Kiseljak where a woman from the U.S. embassy was shot and wounded on July 12 as she was leavng town in a car to return to Sarajevo. Earlier, a U.N. spokesman told reporters that Croat police had detained nine Croats linked to the incident. But Croat police in Kiseljak, outside Sarajevo, said other arrests were not related to the shooting.
The police statement alleged the three suspects, all in their twenties, drove from Kiseljak to attend a football tournament nearby after having "a few drinks." "They overtook a vehicle with Sarajevo plates, whose driver made a provocative and offensive motion directed at the Croats," the statement alleged. "Offended by that gesture the driver of the Croat car pulled over, took out his gun and fired two shots at the vehicle, one of which hit its rear right part," the statement said.
The American woman was struck in the back and underwent surgery in Sarajevo before being flown to a U.S. military hospital in Germany for further treatment. Alex Ivanko, spokesman for international police, said the suspects were taken by Croat helicopter to the western town of Livno where they were arraigned before a judge on Monday.
"They are expected to sent to a prison in west Mostar," he said, mentioning the capital of a self-proclaimed Croat separatist mini-state which extends to Kiseljak, 30 km (18 miles) west of Sarajevo. Ivanko did not know if formal charges had been laid.
A number of American government employees have been killed and injured in Bosnia, but all through road and air accidents rather than hostile fire.
