Bosnian Croat Court
Holds Muslim Police Chief
Without Charges‘We have asked west Mostar police if they had
specific charges. They couldn't produce any.
We asked them if they had a pending arrest warrant,
they couldn't produce that either.’

SARAJEVO, July 20 (Reuters) - A separatist Bosnian Croat court has remanded a Muslim police chief in custody for 30 days pending an inquiry into war-crimes allegations, the United Nations said on Saturday.
U.N. police stationed in postwar Bosnia to deter and report on human-rights abuses said the Croats had produced no concrete charges against Emin Zebic, police chief of Jablanica who was arrested in Mostar on Thursday.
He was detained during a meeting under U.N. auspices of Croat and Muslim police chiefs in the Croat-held part of the divided city to discuss improving freedom of movement within Bosnia's shaky Muslim-Croat federation. The Muslim-led central government in Sarajevo retaliated by detaining eight Bosnian Croat militia officers near Jablanica but freed them after a strong protest by international police (IPTF) commissioner Peter Fitzgerald.
The arrests for alleged atrocities during the 1993-94 Muslim-Croat war aggravated tensions within the federation. IPTF spokesman Alex Ivanko said Zebic appeared in a west Mostar court on Friday and was remanded for 30 days to Rodoc prison, notorious for mistreatment of Muslim detainees during the war.
"We have asked west Mostar police if they had specific charges. They couldn't produce any. We asked them if they had a pending arrest warrant, they couldn't produce that either," Ivanko told a news briefing in Sarajevo. "We understand these are strictly allegations and we are not aware of concrete charges."
Mostar split into Muslim and Croat sectors during the war and the western half remains a fief of Croat ultra-nationalists dedicated to secession of their region from Bosnia.
