German Soldier is Shot in Croatia BONN, June 19 (Reuters) - A German soldier in Croatia was shot in the leg while travelling in an army vehicle but was not seriously hurt, Bonn's defence ministry said on Wednesday. A spokesman said the 31-year-old sergeant was hit on Tuesday while riding in a truck from Trogir to the German base at Primosten. The bullet from a small-calibre weapon struck his left calf. He was the country's first peacekeeper to be shot in Croatia.
"There is no indication of a political motive," the spokesman said, adding it was not even clear whether the bullet had been deliberately aimed at the victim. Neither he nor the driver saw anyone or heard the shot. The wounded man would probably be released from a military field hospital early next week.
Germany has around 2,700 soldiers in Croatia supporting the NATO-led peacekeeping force in neighbouring Bosnia. Bonn has made Germany's participation in the mission a point of honour after a half-century of self-imposed military restraint spawned by the horrors Nazis unleashed on Europe.
