Holbrooke Comments Said Unkind to Europe
Europe Says it Deserves Some Credit for Peace
Richard Holbrooke BRUSSELS, May 13 (Reuters) — Italy's foreign minister accused former U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke on Monday of "lacking generosity" in comments over Europe's role in Bosnia. Susanna Agnelli told reporters after a EU foreign ministers' meeting that Europe deserved some credit for peace developments.

She said international mediator Carl Bildt had been told by Holbrooke that military preparations for elections in Bosnia were proceeding well under U.S. direction, but civillian preparations were faring badly under European direcion. "This is a comment sadly lacking in generosity," said Agnelli, adding the the remark had come in a letter from Holbrooke to Bildt.

It is not the first time Holbrooke has angered European officials over comments he has made regarding EU diplomacy. Earlier this year he said Europe had been sleeping while U.S. President Bill Clinton was mediating in a territorial dispute between Greece and Turkey.
