Map: Kenzevici SARAJEVO, July 8 (Reuters) - A Portuguese peacekeeping convoy was attacked on Bosnian Serb territory on Sunday and returned fire at three unknown assailants who escaped, NATO said.

Three Portuguese vehicles carrying six soldiers were driving with food from Sarajevo to the Serb town of Rogatica in eastern Bosnia when they were shot at near Kenzevici. There were no casualties. Major Brett Boudreau, a NATO spokesman in Sarajevo, said: "It appears we wouldn't be able to discount rogue elements outside (Serb) military control."

A civilian relief convoy was stoned near Rogatica last week while hauling shelter materials to the Muslim enclave of Gorazde. U.N. spokesman Kris Janowski said the convoy was stopped at an illegal Serb checkpoint at Kopaci outside Gorazde and attacked by youths.

"We do acknowledge the continued presence of foreign forces in country who are not part of any "formed up" force. We believe they are somewhat integrated into the society through marriage. I'm not aware they pose any threat to us per se." None of the militants is believed to be members of organised military units but NATO sources said it would be impossible and foolish to discount a possibility that a group could mount an attack against U.S. or NATO forces.

NATO raided what it described as a "terrorist training camp" in central Bosnia in February, complete with Iranian instructors, Bosnian Muslim students and an array of exotic weapons and explosive devices. The Bosnian government maintained the facility was for counter-terrorist training.
