NATO's Solana Says Bildt Talks
Will Lead to Karadzic’s RemovalBONN, May 20 (Reuters) — NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana said on Monday he believed talks between international mediator Carl Bildt and the Bosnian Serb leadership would lead to the removal of Serb leader Radovan Karadzic. “I do think we are involved in a process which will lead to the oustage of Karadzic,” Solana told reporters after the first day of an international disarmament conference in Bonn. Solana met Bildt in Athens on Monday.
Bildt's spokesman told reporters in Sarajevo that Bildt had a firm understanding rather than a formal agreement with the Bosnian Serb leadership that Karadzic would leave public life.
German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, hosting the expert-level conference in Bonn together with the NATO alliance, said it was imperative that Karadzic, who has been charged with war crimes by the international tribunal on former Yugoslavia in The Hague, should “disappear.” Asked to elaborate, Kinkel said the Dayton peace agreement required that former warring parties must cooperate with the tribunal — so that Karadzic must give himself up or be extradited — and that those accused of war crimes be stripped of their political responsibilities.
