Bosnian Serb 'President' Radovan Karadzic
Dismisses Prime Minister Rajko Kasagic

PALE, Bosnia, May 15 (Reuters) — Bosnian Serb "president" Radovan Karadzic said on Wednesday he had dismissed Prime Minister Rajko Kasagic, regarded by the West as a moderate alternative to hardliners trying to undermine the peace process.

A statement from Karadzic's office said Kasagic was sacked to "protect constitutional order ... and prevent any further worsening of the crisis in the government's work." He said Kasagic's police of cooperation with U.N. organizations and chief civilian administrator Carl Bildt threatened the vital interests of the Bosnian Serb republic.

Kasagic normally works from the north Bosnian Serb town of Banja Luka but reliable sources there said he was currently visiting Pale, outside Sarajevo, where Karadzic is based. Karadzic said deputy prime ministers would run the government until a replacement for Kasagic was named.

The dismissal was a blow to moderate Bosnian Serbs and to Bildt who have both been promoting Banja Luka as a counter-balance to the hardliners in Pale.
