stability in province where Balkan war began
BELGRADE, June 18 (Reuters) - Serbia's ruling Socialist party said on Tuesday peace was at risk in the troubled province of Kosovo after a series of shooting incidents that left one Serb policeman dead and two wounded.
One policeman was shot dead and another seriously wounded when four bullets hit their police car on Monday night in one of three attacks reported over the past two days in the predominantly Albanian province, state news agency Tanjug said.
The executive board of the Socialist party said in a statement quoted by Tanjug that the shooting incidents "jeopardised peace." "The attacks undermine all efforts to restore a lasting peace to the province and create stable conditions for a peaceful and safe life for all citizens, regardless of ethnic or other origin," Tanjug quoted the statement as saying.
Unidentified gunmen opened automatic weapons fire on Serb police just before midnight on Sunday and Monday in the village of Luzane and the towns of Kosovska Mitrovica and Podujevo, the Serbian interior ministry said. Assailants threw a hand grenade in the attack on the Luzane police station, the ministry added.
Kosovo Albanian media said Serbian police had blocked all roads into Podujevo and accused them of harassing and beating Albanians following the shooting incidents.
Ethnic tensions have been running high in Kosovo since violence erupted in April. Five Serbs, including a policemen, were shot dead in a spate of attacks launched apparently in revenge for the death of an Albanian medical student. A small Serbian minority in Kosovo rules the Albanian majority through a heavily-armed police force which has been accused of rampant human rights abuses.
Ethnic Albanians, who make up some 90 percent of the population, have boycotted Belgrade's rule and set up parallel schools and administration, demanding independence.
