Macedonia’s President Says Karadzic Must Stand Trial STRASBOURG, France, June 24 (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic must stand trial before an international war crimes tribunal if the peoples of former Yuguslavia are to be reconciled, Macedonian President Kiro Glogorov said on Monday. "There is a decision by the International Penal Tribunal (IPT) in the Hague to indict him for war crimes. So he must be able to address the court so that it can determine his guilt or innocence," Gligorov said on a visit to the Council of Europe. "Any other course will not permit reconciliation (among former Yugoslav peoples)," he told a news conference. Karadzic has remained self-styled "president" of the Bosnian Serb republic in defiance of the international community and his supporters said last week they might nominate him for elections in September, drawing immediate world condemnation. The Macedonian president, whose country was admitted to the Council of Europe last year, urged the 39-nation organisation which promotes human rights and democracy not to delay admitting Croatia for too long. The Council's parliamentary assembly has approved Croatia's application but member governments have delayed its accession because of concern over human rights and Zagreb's failure to cooperate with the Hague tribunal or make the Bosnian Croats comply with all of the Dayton peace agreement. "The only solution is to support the independence of the (former Yugoslav) countries and their rapid entry into the economic, political and military structures of Europe," Gligorov said in a speech to the parliamentary assembly. |
