Bus Hits Anti-Tank MineSARAJEVO, July 2 (Reuters) - Two people were killed and 21 injured when a bus carrying civilians hit an anti-tank mine in northwest Bosnia, highlighting the acute mine problem in the war-ravaged country, NATO said on Tuesday.
"The incident happened on Monday afternoon seven km (four miles) south of Sipovo," Major Tom Moyer, spokesman for the NATO-led peace implementation force (IFOR) in Sarajevo, told Reuterss. He said the bus, "with probably Serb civilians in it," hit an anti-tank mine while entering a marked mine field. He said 10 of the injured were in a very serious condition.
Moyer said the IFOR British unit in charge of the area reacted immediately and sent a field ambulance unit and an explosive ordnance disposal team. Before being able to help the casualties, the British troops had to clear the area of other mines, he said.
Moyer said the wounded were first treated in an IFOR hospital and later taken to the civilian hospital in Sipovo.
Experts estimate there could be up to three million mines strewn across Bosnia, now being cleared mostly by IFOR and by local forces. Donor countries participating in Bosnia's post-war reconstruction have allocated millions of dollars for clearing mines, a recognition of the huge obstacle these constitute to a restoration of normality after the 43-month war in the former Yugoslav republic.
