Casado, Izetbegovic Meet
on Mostar Election FateSARAJEVO, May 22 (Reuters) The European Union's administrator in Mostar Ricardo Perez Casado met President Alija Izetbegovic on Wednesday to discuss troubled plans for municipal elections in the divided southern Bosnian city.
Casado described the talks as "constructive," although he refused to elaborate, and said he would travel to the Croatian capital Zagreb to meet President Franjo Tudjman on Thursday for talks on the same issue.
Mostar's elections, scheduled for May 31, were thrown into doubt earlier this month after political parties based on the city's Muslim east bank failed to register by the deadline. Muslim candidates are protesting at voting rules that they say disenfranchise non-Croats who fled or were evicted from homes in the Mostar area by Croat separatists during the war.
The EU confirmed a week ago that the elections would go ahead as proposed. They say a delay could jeopardise plans to hold elections throughout Bosnia in September. But EU officials in Mostar have indicated that the poll is in serious trouble and could still be postponed.
