Berserkistan Navigator Croats Warned of Possible
Attack by Mostar Muslims

ZAGREB, June 1 (Reuters) - Croatian media said on Saturday that Croat police in the divided Bosnian city of Mostar had warned Croats against using its main borderline street to avoid possible assault by Muslims. Police in the Croat western sector of the European Union-administered city acted after a group of Muslims harassed Croat drivers and stoned their cars on the Bulevar avenue on Friday, the Bosnian Croat news agency Habena said.

A broadcaster at Muslim east Mostar's radio station told Reuterss by telephone that the incidents amounted to a protest over the arrest of a Muslim man by Croats. EU spokesmen were unavailable for comment.

The Bulevar area, which saw some of the worst fighting in the 1993-94 Croat-Muslim war in Bosnia, now forms the demarcation line between two communities who signed a peace treaty two years ago but remain deeply estranged. Muslims and Croats initially fought as allies against Bosnia's separatist Serbs but that alliance crumbled into a scramble for territory in central and southern Bosnia. Nowhere was the fighting more vicious than in Mostar.

Mostar has been under EU administration since July 1994 while a peaceful reintegration of the city is sought. Elections to help reunify the city are to be held under EU supervision on June 30.
