France Blames Zagreb
for Mostar ProblemsEU is likely to intervene 'at the highest
level with authorities in Zagreb'
PARIS, July 25 (Reuters) - France said on Thursday it held Croatia responsible for the actions of minority Croats in neighbouring Bosnia that threaten to destroy the European Union's peace mission in the city of Mostar.
Foreign ministry spokesman Jacques Rummelhardt told reporters that EU officials would within hours intervene "at the highest level with authorities in Zagreb" over the situation in Mostar, where local Croats refuse to accept results of elections to reunify the city.
The European Union has said it was ready to scrap its peace mission in Mostar and set an August 4 deadline for the Croats to lift their boycott of a newly elected city assembly. "The EU officials will stress that Croatia is responsible for (Bosnian) Croat obstruction in Mostar in the same way Belgrade is held responsible for the acts of the leaders of the Srpska (Bosnian Serb) Republic," Rummmelhardt said.
EU officials and members of the office of international High Representative to Bosnia Carl Bildt tried on Wednesday to persuade the Croats to agree to a solution devised to break the impasse, but the talks ended without result. EU officials said their mandate to reunify the divided city was hanging by a thread after the Croats refused to accept results of local elections on June 30 in which Muslims won a majority on the city council.
"The European Union are understandably frustrated by all of this and have imposed what appears to be a serious deadline for August 4th," said Michael Maclay, spokesman for Bildt.
