Morphed into
Olympic Medals
Olympic Stadium, Atlanta SARAJEVO, June 25 (AP) - Medals melted down from sniper rifles will be presented to the Atlanta Olympics next month by three Sarajevo children -- one from each of Bosnia’s warring ethnic groups.

"It will be a symbol from Bosnia, from the children of different nationalities,” Elvira Muminovic of the Sarajevo Children’s Embassy said on Monday.

The number of medals -- 38 -- represents the number of cities that have hosted the Olympics since they were reinaugurated in 1896. Sarajevo hosted the 1984 Winter Games.

The NATO-led Implementation Force maintaining last year’s U.S.-brokered peace accords provided two AK-47 sniper rifles confiscated from Bosnian Serb forces for melting-down material for the medals.

Over 1,600 children were killed in the Bosnian capital during the four-year civil war, including some who died as a result of random sniper fire aimed at the city’s main thoroughfare. The Children’s Embassy, which assists children in Sarajevo affected by the war, will send a Muslim, a Croat and a Serb child from the capital to Atlanta, Muminovic said.
