Shoots Muslim in Weekend Incident

SARAJEVO, May 28 (Reuters) - A gunman in a Bosnian Croat police uniform shot and seriously wounded a Muslim man in central Bosnia, a U.N. spokesman said on Tuesday. "There was a very ugly incident that happened over the weekend between Zepce and Zavidovici," U.N. International Police Task Force (IPTF) spokesman Alex Ivanko told reporters. Ivanko said a Muslim man and his wife were driving along the road when a man wearing a Croatian police uniform stopped the car and asked for their vehicle registration. When the Muslim produced a Bosnian registration, the gunman demanded Croatian documents and then opened fire with an AK-47 rifle, wounding the driver in the head.

Ivanko accused Bosnian Croat police of failing to cooperate with the IPTF over the incident. "They have informed us that the suspect has been arrested although the details of the investigation have not been provided... which is of concern to us," he said.

Although Muslims and Croats are partners in an uneasy federation under the Dayton peace accord signed last December, deep mistrust sours relations between the two ethnic groups. They formed their alliance in 1994 to fight against Serb supremacy after a territorial war lasting almost a year. Although Dayton promises freedom and safety of movement across Bosnia, local nationalist leaders frequently block members of rival ethnic groups.
