California Firm Wins
$164 Million Bosnian
Reconstruction ContractInfrastructure project by Parsons Corp. consortium
will employ 40,000 Bosnians
PASADENA, California, July 17 (AP) -- Parsons Corp. won a U.S. government contract to help rebuild Bosnia, bringing a bittersweet close to this spring’s fatal trade mission in which the company’s chief was killed in a plane crash on a Balkan mountainside. A consortium led by the Pasadena-based Parsons won the $164.5 million contract, which includes 100 projects and is expected to employ 40,000 Bosnians. The work is to begin later this month.
Parsons’ chief executive, Leonard J. Pieroni, died last April in a crash that also killed Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 34 others. Brown, Pieroni, and the other executives were on a trade mission to drum up business for U.S. firms in the war-torn region. "From our company’s standpoint, we felt it was a must-win type of opportunity just to continue the work Len Pieroni had started in Bosnia," said Dean Nottingham, director of federal programs for the international engineering firm.
Parsons was also involved in the rebuilding of Kuwait and Vietnam.
Two other consortium members also lost their chiefs in the crash -- Metcalf & Eddy, a Boston-based subsidiary of Air & Water Technologies, and Riggs International Banking Corp. Parsons is the primary contractor for the U.S. Agency for the International Development project, which covers the construction of water distribution systems, electric power substations, roads, sewers, bridges and emergency shelters.
The other consortium members are Padco, a Washington, D.C., architecture firm; S.C. Myers Associates, a Washington cost estimating firm; and Unioninvest, a Bosnian engineering and construction firm.
