Sarajevo, June 12 -- The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced Wednesday that a group of 25 Croatians of have been expelled from a village near Novi Travnik in Central Bosnia. The area had seen some of the most bitter fighting between Muslims and Croatians during their fratricidal war in 1993. The Croat-held area had been cut off for nearly a year and centered around the Croatian city of Vitez. Fighting in the area saw numerous expulsions and atrocities including the destruction and massacre of the Muslim village of Ahmnici. The area has been tense ever since.

Chris Janowski, spokesman for the UNHCR said, "The Travnik-Vitez area has been one of the most cooperative areas we have concerning returns so we're very worried about this. Many families have returned to the area so we're not really sure what was going on but we're checking with the mayor of Vitez to investigate that further."

Local Muslims and police told the Croats that they were not included in the Dayton Plan's framework for refugee returns and were there illegally. They also tried to eject a local Catholic priest but gave up when he refused to go.
