Berserkistan Navigator Milosevic Unveils New
Satellite Earth Station

By Jovan Kovacic

Slobodan Milosevic BELGRADE, July 7 (Reuters) - Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic inaugurated a new satellite ground station on Sunday, the Yugoslav news agency Tanjug reported. It said the inaugural ceremony for the Jugoslavija 3 (YU-3) station took place in the village of Prilike near Ivanjica in central Serbia.

The new satellite station, with 960 digital channels, will improve telephone links between rump Yugoslavia -- Serbia and Montenegro -- and the rest of the world, the agency said. It will also give access to the Intelsat and Eutelsat networks, providing broader television links with Europe. The new ground station enables Yugoslavia to have direct telecommunications links with 15 European countries.

The construction of the station, equipped by NEC of Japan, began in March 1992, but was suspended because of the sanctions in June the same year. The work continued without NEC participation in 1995, and was completed late the same year, Tanjug said.

Sanctions were imposed on Belgrade for its support of Bosnian Serbs at the onset of the war in Bosnia in April 1992 which many in the West believe was masterminded by Milosevic himself.

In 1993 Milosevic changed tack, forcing Bosnian Serbs to opt for peace. His role in the Dayton peace pact which ended the 43-month old war won him a suspension of sanctions except for access to international financial institutions.
