Departing NATO Commander
Adm. Leighton Smith
Honored with NATO Medal‘You have made an outstanding contribution
to peace on this continent’
—NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana
NATO's outgoing commander in Bosnia, Admiral Leighton Smith, on Wednesday was awarded the NATO medal for his work in overseeing the alliance's 60,000- strong peace mission, its biggest-ever ground operation. "You have made an outstanding contribution to peace on this continent," NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana told a large crowd of officials, family and friends at a sun-drenched ceremony outside NATO's sprawling Brussels headquarters.
Solana was flanked by NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe General George Joulwan and the chairman of the alliance's military committee General Klaus Naumann. Smith will formally hand over his duties to his successor Admiral Joseph Lopez on July 31 at NATO's southern command headquarters -- rear base for the huge air, sea and land operation in Bosnia -- before taking retirement.
