World Bank Approves $40 Million
In Loans to Help Re-Build Bosnia

WASHINGTON (Reuters) — The World Bank said on Tuesday that it approved three loans totalling $40 million to help war-torn Bosnia rebuild its shattered economy. The loans include some funds for the Serb republic, but it is not clear whether Bosnian Serb leaders will accept the money as it is being funnelled through the central government of Bosnia Herzegovina that they effectively do not recognize.

The largest loan, for $20 million, is designed to restore heating to tens of thousands of apartments in Sarajevo that were disconnected from the district heating system by the war. The other two loans are for $10 million each. One will be used to reconstruct classrooms and provide teaching materials for students.

The other will aid disabled war victims with rehabilitation services and prosthetic devices.
