It's Now The Zvornik Eight:
Bosnian Serbs Charge Another Muslim
PALE, Bosnia, May 30 (Reuters) - Bosnian Serb police said on Thursday they had arrested another Muslim on murder charges in a case in which the U.N. has accused the Serbs of obtaining confessions through duress. The Bosnian Serb SRNA news agency reported police were holding Samir Avdic, who joins seven other Muslims accused of murdering four Serb woodcutters in eastern Bosnia.
The prisoners, known as the "Zvornik Seven," surrendered to NATO troops near the former Muslim enclave of Srebrenica earlier this month and were handed over to the Serb police. The Serbs allege the Muslims confessed to the murders but the U.N. insists the prisoners were beaten and forced to make the confesions. Deputy police chief Mane Djuric in the Serb-held town of Zvornik said Avdic "confessed to the crime," SRNA reported.
A United Nations spokesman said on Wednesday the Muslims probably would not receive a fair trial and had yet to be visited by their defence lawyer. "They have already been convicted by the Serb media, the Zvornik police have beaten them, a fair trial seems very unlikely," Alexander Ivanko told reporters in Sarajevo.
Bosnian government authorities deny the Serbs' account and say the Muslims had been hiding in the hills since the fall of Srebrenica last July. Thousands of Muslim men from Srebrenica remain unaccounted for since the Serbs captured the enclave.
